What you should know before starting Invisalign treatment.

Over the last couple of weeks I have performed several ‘disappointing’ orthodontic examinations on patients who were treated with what they were told was Invisalign. As it turns out, their provider used a far inferior product known as ClearCorrect ™ instead of the much more superior Invisalign product that is on the market.

The first telltale sign may be that instead of using a digital scanner to capture the teeth and bite relationship, the gooey old impressions were used.  Some providers of Invisalign are still using this outdated and often inaccurate approach, but they are few in number and have not treated many cases.  Don’t be the  ‘Guinea-pig’ patient, as they say when you need practice.

The second tip that you are not using Invisalign is the packaging. Ask to see the shipping package as well as the individual packages. Displayed clearly is the Invisalign logo. The word Invisalign is also displayed on the aligners themselves.

Another important note is the fit of the aligner; because Invisalign aligners fabricated from a digital scan are more accurate, the aligners themselves are very flexible and the fit is extremely accurate. They do not contact the tissues and they have no sharp edges. Often ClearCorrect ™ is very tight, poor fitting, and often cuts the lips and cheeks.

Finally, the most important key note is the experience of your provider. Do you really want to be one of the first patients to have someone experiment on you? Would you have your general practice physician perform heart surgery on you? You only want to go through this treatment once, and with no regrets! Those patients that I examined last week were thoroughly disappointed after having invested over $5,000 dollars on a treatment that their providers “tried” and it did not work! Now they have to haggle with their provider to get their money back-Good luck!

So before you begin Invisalign treatment, check the Invisalign website for the provider in your area with the most cases completed and the best reputation to stack the deck in your favor!

Patient of the Month: Kimberly Payne

Twelve year old Kimberly Payne accomplished many things over the summer before returning to school.  One of those achievements was being selected as Mississippi’s State Ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60.  This program encourages students to participate in 60 minutes of fitness a day.  Her role as ambassador includes creating fun ideas to make health and fitness a priority in Mississippi Schools.  Kimberly is currently working on a grant program that would put salad bars into school cafeterias.  When asked the importance of being fit Kimberly replied, “Being healthy helps you stay fit, be productive, and helps you be more focused on your goals.”

Along with fitness and health, Kimberly is very passionate about volunteer work.  One charity that is very dear to her is St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  Since preschool, Kimberly has been adamant on taking donations to give to St. Jude.  “ Knowing that some others will receive something that they may not have is rewarding and makes me feel humble” says Kimberly.

Now that she is back in school, Kimberly is busy with cheerleading and studying.  She has maintained Honor Roll since Kindergarten and realizes the importance of education. For this school year her goal is to maintain perfect attendance and A/B Honor Roll for another year.

Kimberly knows grades and dedication matter for her career choices in the future as she plans on getting her college degree and becoming an elementary or middle school teacher.
“Kimberly, has always been a dedicated person” says Joey and Julie Payne.  “When she sets out to do something she completes it.  Kimberly never has to be forced to get ready for school. She works hard inside and out of school.  She is a cheerleader, she has tumbling classes, she is focused on her Fuel Up to Play 60 State Ambassador Role, and her charity work for others.  She puts other people first and foremost.  She is a very loving person and we are proud of her for all her accomplishments.”

We are proud of her too! Her dedication to education and fitness have landed her the title of patient of the month. Kimberly will receive a $250 gift certificate from Dr. Frigo and our staff to Edgewater Mall.  Congrats Kimberly!
